2016 March Madness Predictions

As the regular NCAA basketball season comes to a close, Saxon Scope writer Nick Gasparis offers his thoughts on the post season.

There are four teams that stand out of all the other teams in college basketball this year and they are Oklahoma Sooners (20-5),North Carolina Tar Heels  (21-5), Syracuse Orange (18-9), and the Kentucky Wildcats (20-6).

The Oklahoma Sooners started the season 12-0 and were the number one team in the country. Buddy Hield, a senior at Oklahoma is averaging 25.2 points per game, 5.6 rebounds per game, and 2.2 assists per game. He shoots 49% from 3-pt and 89% from the free throw line. He is hands down the best player in the NCAA and could win the wooden award. The wooden award is a trophy for the men’s basketball player of the year. They have beaten many good teams like Villanova, Wisconsin, Iowa State, Texas, Baylor, and LSU. Ryan Spangler a forward on the team averages 10.4 points per game, 9.7 rebounds per game. Isaiah Cousins is also one of the many talented players on this Oklahoma team. If they give Buddy the ball and let him do his things this team can go far in March Madness.

The Syracuse Orange is my under dog team that can go far in the tournament. Last year they were unable to play in the tournament because of recruiting violations. This year they are hungry to beat teams. They started the season 6-0 winning the Atlantis tournament against Texas a&M in the championship. Then coach Boeheim had to serve his suspension that went into Atlantic Coast Conference play. The orange started the conference play 0-4. But are starting to get back on their feet now that he’s back. Trevor Cooney a senior at Syracuse is averaging 13.6 points per game, and 1.6 steals per game. He’s a big threat from the three point line. He can shoot with anyone in his face. I’ve even seen him pull up from way behind the line before. Michael Gbinije another senior and the best player at Syracuse is averaging 17.2 points per game, 4.1 rebounds per game, 4.4 assists per game, and  2.3 steals per game. Malachi Richardson, Tyler Roberson, and Tyler Lydon are three other players that can shoot and rebound really well if they use all of their players at their strengths and not give up easy points on defense they have a shot

The Kentucky Wildcats are a team that are flying under the radar this year. They stayed at around twenty in the rankings and are now making their way up. Last year with the “pursuit of perfection” they were undefeated until the final four well they fell short to Wisconsin. Kentucky was favored to win the whole thing. This year all of the seniors left and they don’t have as much depth as they used to, but they can still light up the floor when they play. Tyler Ulis is explosive on the court, he can do everything. He scores 16.4 points per game, and 6.8 assists per game. He averages 3.1 rebounds and he’s only 5 foot 11. He puts all his effort into basketball and its paying off. Jamal Murray is a freshman from New Jersey. He is just a pure athlete. Averaging 19.2 points per game, and 5.0 rebounds per game. If they play their style of basketball and not let teams get easy buckets they can go far.
