A college level Model United Nations conference is usually a daunting experience. It is filled with veteran delegates and stiff competition where only the best of the best win awards. But for Langley’s Model United Nations team this was no hurdle. Langley MUN took home the award for Outstanding Delegation at the VAMUNC conference at the University of Virginia last Friday, November 8th.
Though Langley MUN’s delegates may make it seem like it, this award was not easily achieved. According to senior Julia Pennington, the team members focused their efforts on preparing for the conference and their performance during the competition.
Pennington commended the team saying their “resilience and dedication is one of the strongest aspects that help drive the team.”
Sophomore Zahra Quettawala also felt that Langley owed its success to the strength of the team and praised the team on the hard work and support that was felt from fellow teammates.
The officers also played a large role and really spurred the team on in their victory according to sophomore Audrey Fahlberg.
“The officers are really awesome and always encouraging us to do our best, one of them is my sister. We also couldn’t have done it without our amazing sponsors Ms. Stocks and Mr. Stone,” said Fahlberg.
Though Langley MUN contains members who are new to Model United Nations as well as seasoned delegates, every delegate was expecting new experiences as Langley attended their first college conference this year.
The delegates were exposed to new experiences both unique to them and unique to the Model UN world. Senior Julia Pennington and junior Katherine Cassidy were able to compete in historic campus locations and in new committees for the first time.
With a win at VAMUNC under their belt, Langley MUN is looking forward to the future. “MUNers” are eager to take up the challenge other competitive teams will pose at future college conferences like William and Mary, UPenn, and Duke. Delegates are looking to become more immersed in the Model United Nations and at the same time improve their knowledge of the world. With a great achievement starting off the MUN season, Langley is looking toward the future with high hopes.
