After months of training the time has finally arrived for the highly anticipated 2013 Langley High School Powder Puff Football Game. For weeks, female football players and male cheerleaders have been practicing for the big game and now they get to showcase their abilities for the whole school to see. Powder Puff is a competition between girls from around the school who think they have what it takes to represent their grade in this annual tradition.
For some players, the gender switch has led them to believe that football isn’t just for men anymore. Senior, Ali Cochran, states, “I don’t think it should be a male dominant sport, some of us [girls] can go and compete with the guys day in and day out.” But, her teammate, Heather Uzer explains, “We aren’t the most athletic group of people in our school and I think some things should be left to the boys, this being one of them. ”
As the girls lead the surge down the field with the hopes of scoring points, the boys on the sidelines pep the crowd in their cheerleading uniforms. Led by Senorita Stocks, the boys practice for the big day. “Practice is brutal,” says Junior Stephen Bonacci “We get very little rest in between reps and injuries have run our squad down to minimal numbers.” With game day approaching, Senior JT Meyer takes the opportunity to value his final year as a saxon. “Led by the always eccentric Tim Claude, I believe we can give our girls the boost they need to overcome the Juniors and to lay down their dominance and solidify themselves this year.”
Don’t miss a second of the action this Wednesday October 9th as the Juniors and Seniors duke it out on the turf for school supremacy. Kick-offs begins at 6:00 PM, be there.
