Coming off of an easy 10-0 win against Herndon that saw the mercy rule applied before the game ended, the Saxons’ Ice Hockey team had a bit bigger of a challenge in their next matc -up.
Still, Langley didn’t have too much trouble beating an over-matched Westfield squad 5-2 on Friday night.
The Saxons got off to a quick start when junior forward Evan Sterling scored the first goal of the game four minutes in. Westfield responded by tying the game up with a goal midway through the first period.
Four minutes into the second period, sophomore forward Drew Schneider scored to make it 2-1, and with 50 seconds left in the second period, the Saxons were up 3-1 before Sterling was called for a high stick penalty. Westfield capitalized on the mistake, making it a one-score game on a power play with 12 seconds left in the second period.
The highlight of the night came with 5:04 seconds left when junior forward Kevin Diner weaved through defenders, dazzling the crowd with his puck handling skills and sealing the game for Langley with the fifth goal of the night. The final score of the night was 5-2, and the Saxons had a 31-15 advantage in shots.
