Willow Springs Elementary, a nearby Fairfax County Public School located in Fairfax, is suffering from a suspected outbreak of Norovirus, a highly contagious form of the stomach flu which can cause vomiting, gastrointestinal problems, and dehydration. Over 100 students and teachers were absent on Friday and all weekend activities at the school were cancelled as a precaution. The school underwent a thorough cleaning over the weekend to disinfect any surfaces which still may be contaminated so the school can resume classes on Monday.
The Fairfax County Health Department is investigating to determine if Norovirus is in fact the cause of the illnesses. According to the Centers for Disease Control, Norovirus can be transmitted by consuming food or drinks infected with the virus, touching surfaces contaminated with the virus then touching your mouth of face, and coming in contact with someone who is infected with the virus.
