Like many other members of the Langley community, the members of the Young Democrats Club have been keeping a close eye on the unfolding presidential election process. At their recent meeting, the Young Democrats discussed current political events, the upcoming Republican primaries, and which Republican presidential candidate poses the greatest risk to the re-election of President Obama.
Over the course of their meeting, the assembled students made a chart that included each Republican candidate’s strengths, weaknesses, and chances of success in the presidential election. The students discussed topics ranging from the Iranian capture of a US spy drone to the results of the November 2011 election.
The club president, junior Mujtaba Wani, led the meeting and shared his thoughts about the current political scene. “A candidate who I dismissed quite some time ago, Rick Santorum, virtually tied Romney in the Iowa caucuses. I think it was a last ditch effort on the voters’ part to avoid Romney,” he said. “Nevertheless, polls in New Hampshire and South Carolina, the states of the next two primaries, confirm that Romney is the most likely candidate to win the nomination.”
On the topic of President Obama’s re-election chances against Mitt Romney, Wani said: “Although [Romney] is not worthy of America’s trust considering his lack of commitment to his stances on the issues, he poses the greatest risk to Obama. Still, I have confidence in Obama, because Romney’s flip-flops are going to catch up with him.”
Junior Megan Flynn, another officer of the Young Democrats Club, takes an active interest in politics as well. “I helped out with the Obama campaign in 2008, and I plan on campaigning for Obama in 2012 as well,” she said.
