The New World Tutors club, where students tutor those who have moved from a non-English speaking country and need help, is a great resource for ESOL students. Unfortunately for the New World Tutors club, foreign students have not asked for help all school year.
Last year the club was successful and reeled in five foreign students who needed help with their classes. This year, they’ve gotten zero.
So then comes the real question—why aren’t there any foreign students asking for help in their classes this year?
New World Tutors Club President Elizabeth Regan thinks that it is because “the students are shy and don’t feel like they need help.” She, along with the many other tutors in the club, have created PowerPoints and posted flyers on the school lockers, but no results have shown. The tutors can advertise and promote the club over and over, but ultimately they can only do so much. They can only be helpful if students are actually willing to ask for help.
And until those students break out of their comfort zone and say something, people like Elizabeth Regan will continue to hope.
“There were a lot more kids who needed help last year. They were willing to improve,” said Regan. “Now people just don’t want to do it.”
