On Mar. 11, the sixth most powerful earthquake ever recorded in history struck Japan. The earthquake was recorded as an 8.9 magnitude, and more than 50 aftershocks followed with magnitudes of 6.0 and greater. The area most affected was the east coast of Honshu, about 231 miles northeast of Tokyo.
Following the earthquake, a 33 foot tsunami hurtled across the Pacific Ocean, engulfing the city of Sendai, Japan. Tsunami warnings have been issued across the entire pacific coast, including the west coast of the United States.
An estimated eighty fires have been reported across Japan, causing even more panic and confusion. The death toll is estimated to hit 1000, with many more people injured. This earthquake is one of the biggest catastrophes to hit Japan in over 140 years.
