After six and a half months of construction, the bridge on Leigh Mill Road has finally been reopened. The bridge was first closed by the Virginia Department of Transportation for repairs last July; however, VDOT engineers found that its wing walls and supports were in even worse shape than expected, meaning the entire bridge would have to be torn down and rebuilt. As a result of the closed bridge, at the beginning of the school year buses for Langley, Cooper Middle, and Colvin Run Elementary had to be rerouted, causing delays for local students who would otherwise arrive at school much earlier. However, on Feb. 4, buses were rerouted once again, with use of the open bridge to shorten students’ bus rides to and from schools. The flow of traffic will increase in the area once again as, according to VDOT, about a thousand vehicles use the bridge every day.
