With the advent of a new school year, the class of 2012 has recently taken on the senior title. As usual, this newly acclaimed status means the senior class gains certain privileges to celebrate reaching their fourth and final year at Langley.
The tradition of a five minute early release on Fridays continues from past years, while new privileges have been created and approved by the SGA in correspondence with the administration. This includes a twelve minute early release in honor of graduating in 2012- the first of which is scheduled for December 12.
An all senior lunch period is also being taken under consideration. “It’s very rare to see such a creative idea when it comes to asking for privileges,” said Principal Matthew Ragone. “Just on the creative merits, I want to say yes. However, it’s going to be logistically very hard to pull off without disrupting the lunch block classes.”
Additionally, the PTA provides the senior food privileges during Saxon Time once a month. On the first Thursday of school, parents provided smoothies for the senior class in the courtyard.
Although many requests were accepted, others were denied; this included allowing seniors to get out of class to record the Lip Dub, scheduled for second semester. Some requests were not even brought up. “We knew not to even ask for privileges such as allowing the senior class to leave campus for lunch,” said senior class president Ryan Natal.
However, the privileges seniors have now are always at risk of being taken away if there is any misbehavior. “Unsafe driving in the parking lot could result in loss of the five minute early privilege. Hazing of underclassmen can result in losing all privileges, plus other school wide activities. But, this won’t happen, because this senior class is the best ever,” noted Mr. Ragone.
