Celebrations about motherhood happen everywhere. It is said that these celebrations started in the ancient world when people used to worship Mother Goddesses and had festivals specifically for them. Nowadays that idea has evolved, and the modern interpretation is much different than what was originally intended.
The Mother’s Day we all know and cherish started spreading when a woman named Anna Jarvis trademarked the phrase “Mother’s Day”. She stressed the location of the apostrophe because she meant it to be a day for families to honor their own mother, not a day to celebrate mothers all around the world. That same spelling was used when U.S. President Woodrow Wilson made it an official holiday.
Even though the idea of Mother’s Day is supposed to be just for mothers, these days it applies to anyone who is a maternal figure. That includes aunts, older sisters, grandmothers, and anyone who has acted as a mother when a mother wasn’t there. Mothers are significant figures in our lives. They are our friends, confidants, disciplinarians, teachers, and role models. So on May 8th this year, take some time and do something special for the one person who will always thinks about your wellbeing, show your Mom you love her back.
