With 100th winning game and a baby girl all in one week, Coach Travis Hess could not ask for anymore. The boys’ basketball game played on Feb. 1 against Marshall marks Hess’ 100th win coaching Langley boys basketball and his first child, daughter Gianna Carmela Hess was born on Jan 28.

Winning 100 games is a great achievement and many people applaud Hess for reaching it. “Winning 100 games was great, but the best part of it was all the support from staff and students,” says Hess.

This season was Hess’ sixth season as the boy’s basketball head coach at Langley. When he first arrived here the team was nowhere near what it is today. In his first season, the team’s record was 10-12 then slowly began to improve. The next season the team ended with a 13-13 record and the third they had moved up to an impressive 24-6.

“Over the past years there has been a continued increase in talent, and my staff and I have improved since when I first started here. We have learned more about the game, which makes us better coaches,” says Hess.

Hess claims that crisper, better practices, and drills he and his staff have adopted from watching college teams in addition to a more sophisticated offense have led to greater success for the team over the years.

The 2010-2011 team won their fourth consecutive district title this season and hope to do well in the regional tournament.

“As a coach you always want more,” says Hess. “Any success you get in life you want more of.” But for Hess, his daughter Gianna was the ultimate success for him. “Being a father is like your final accomplishment, what else can you do? It’s a crowning achievement.”
