Surf’s Up

It’s the first day of school, and the last thing you want to do is cry over homework that you’ve accumulated during the day. So why not rewind time to return to the beach! Over the summer, many Langley students took a break from their busy lives to unwind and relax at the beach. Whether it be nearby beaches in Delaware or beaches alongside the Northeast coast, students ventured to the beach to partake in a variety of beach activities.
When asked about his summertime beach destination, Senior Jack Mulquin replied that he can frequently be found at Bethany beach, where his family owns a house. During his annual trip, Jack states that he likes to, “go crabbing, eat pizza with friends, chill at the boardwalk, and go boogie boarding.” Jack is one of the many Langley students who enjoy these fun summer activities, and Bethany beach happens to be one of the most popular vacation spots for Northern Virginia families. Delaware beaches, which include Bethany alongside Rehoboth and Dewey, offer a local beach atmosphere with low cost. While Bethany and Dewey beach have been known to cater to older people, all of these beaches offer family friendly activities and restaurants which make these beaches great options for anyone.

“The beach was fun, and it probably had the best boardwalk in America,” said Sophomore Haley Lobsenz, who went to Rehoboth this past summer. When asked why one should visit Rehoboth Beach in Delaware, Lobsenz said that there were many different things to do there, especially going to Funland, a local amusement park. “Funland is the best part of Rehoboth in my opinion,” said Lobsenz, “they have so many rides and games there, my personal favorite being the Viking Ship ride.”

Another popular beach, Corolla in Cape Cod, also attracted Langley students. Sophomore Alan Vaghedi, who described the experience as “very fun”, said that there was “a lot to do close to the beach and the weather was perfect.” There are many different types of beaches that Langley students might go to instead of ones in Virginia or surrounding Maryland and Delaware. Some might go to beaches in New Jersey, while others would much rather go to Hilton Head in South Carolina. Students might also go to different beaches depending on which ones are more enjoyable or relaxing to them.

While the beach might seem overrated to some as being the typical beach vacation, it does have its perks. As schoolwork starts to accumulate and the stress of mundane life starts to settle in, the idea of sitting back under the umbrella watching the waves crash over the shimmering sand seems too good to be true.
