As the winter sports season slowly dies down, the next season already nearly underway. Seven spring sports – baseball, lacrosse, soccer, tennis, track, softball, and crew – now need to conduct intense tryouts and choose between many talented athletes to form elite teams.
Langley’s spring sports season is considered by many to be the most successful time of the year, because the teams have won many district, regional, and state titles. Lacrosse has been the primary sport of success, winning two consecutive state titles, but soccer in recent years has also has shown progress and promise.
So what does it take to make a great team? Coaches and conditioning clinics play an important role in preparing athletes for the upcoming season. “My coach sets up conditioning programs throughout the year to get us ready for lacrosse,” said sophomore Amy Garrigan.
The tryouts themselves also help the athletes prepare. “Tryouts give me a motive to be physically and mentally prepared for the upcoming season,” said sophomore Yousef Sersy, a soccer player for Langley. This year, the tryouts begin begin Feb. 21 or 22 and it takes the coaches a little less than a week to choose the members.
Springs sports tryouts are a significant part of every sport and important steps and procedures must be taken to help with making a team. A lot more effort and preparation goes into making a team than meets the eye.
