The class elections are a very important part of every school year. Class office holders work hard to make each year enjoyable for students and to make Langley High School an excellent place for learning. Despite the hard work that comes with holding office, lots of students dream of being elected.
There are many reasons why students run. Some students run because holding office looks good for college applications, while others run because they actually want to make a difference in their school and their class. Grace Gent said, “[I ran because] I really like math and I have an older brother who…was the treasurer for all four years, so I kind of knew what being treasurer was like, and I…like leadership responsibilities.” Other candidates like Warren Kahn like the program because “it is fun planning events for the students and seeing all the students have a great time at the activities we planned.”
This year, eleven students ran hoping to occupy one of the five offices. George Lorenze, Julia Mays, Shayan Sanjideh, and Madison McConnell were all candidates for the presidency. David Kim and Gabe Achi were competing to be the vice president. Charlotte Fitzgerald ran for secretary unchallenged. Grace Gent and Riley Viener were involved in a tight race to be treasurer, and Nihith Chaturvedula and Warren Kahn ran for SGA representatives uncontested.
Each candidate gave a speech to the freshman class in late September during Saxon Time in order to convince the electorate why they were the best person for the job. This was an important event in the elections because it gave the voters a chance to see who each candidate was, and what they hoped to accomplish if elected.
Over the next few days, students voted in their biology classrooms, and by early October, the results were finalized. George Lorenze had been elected Freshman Class President, David Kim had been elected Vice President, Charlotte Fitzgerald had been elected Secretary, Grace Gent had been elected Treasurer, and Nihith Chaturvedula and Warren Kahn had both been elected SGA Representatives.
These students are now tasked with making freshman year at Langley High School the best it can be. Some of them already have ideas about how they are going to accomplish that, even after only one meeting. George Lorenze said, “I think we’d like to get in different, fun spirit days and fundraisers into the freshman class and have certain rewards for class funding like donut days…on Halloween and other holidays.”
All of these newly elected students are excited fulfill their responsibilities and make the 2014-2015 school year fantastic.
