If someone were to describe Langley’s Varsity Baseball team in three words, those words would be determined, persevering and tireless. This past Tuesday, Langley’s baseball team significantly outplayed Marshall (7-1) to start them off with a 1-0 record in their district tournament.
“We were all focused because it was our first district game and just trying to get a win from Marshall,” said junior Ricky Ortiz.
This game was especially important to the team after a tough loss to West Potomac the week before that should have left them in disappointment. But the team responded to this loss instead with senior Cal Jadacki batting for the first time this season and leading the top of the inning with a left-field hit. Later on, senior pitcher Bryan Even preserved their 5-0 lead while the Statesmen had to send nine batters to the plate.
“We played a much better ball game all around. Bryan pitched great; we were aggressive at the plate and had a solid defense,” junior catcher JT Edwards explained.
The lead itself is what continued to fuel the team’s confidence as they were 7-1 by the sixth inning. The Saxons closed the game with junior pitcher Nick Serger, securing the lead with his outstanding pitching.
“It definitely felt good going in to pitch with a six run lead. It helped me stay relaxed and confident that I could get the batters out,” said Serger.
The emotions that were left after the varsity team’s game on Friday against West Potomac were of discontent and frustration from each team member; which fueled the team’s even greater desire to score a big win in their next game. With the entire team’s persistence and determination, they were able to bring Langley back another win and a redemption that exceeded all expectations.
