With the voice of a gospel singer blessed with a five octave range and looks which rival a modern day equivalent of Jean Harlow, Christina Aguilera has made quite the name for herself as a universally renowned pop sensation. Recently, after her somewhat disastrous new single “Not Myself Tonight” was released, Aguilera has managed to save her career from a catastrophic downfall due to her latest artistic pursuit- a breakout acting role in the musical “Burlesque.”
Starring alongside legendary music icon Cher, Aguilera showed off her various array of talents; singing, dancing, and surprisingly, acting. In “Burlesque,” Aguilera portrays a typical Midwestern girl, Ali, who has dreams of stardom. The plot is set into action when she moves to Los Angeles and develops an obsession with the nearby Burlesque club. Eventually, after an initial rejection by club manager Tess (played by Cher) Ali earns a part in the nightly show.
After an attempted sabotage by resident mean girl Nikki (played by Kristen Bell), Ali is able to display her singing chops to a full audience, all of whom are utterly enthralled by her rendition of “Tough Lover.” Her rise to fame begins after this, and soon two different love interests emerge as well as money conflicts concerning ownership of the club.
The costumes and makeup in “Burlesque” are incredible: think vintage lingerie combined with traditional jazz attire. A supreme glitter overload and neon lights only add to the showgirl effect of the production.
Also, the music in “Burlesque” ranges from sentimental to retro and even to some good old club style break-it-down jams. To accompany the music, dance is incorporated into almost every scene. The choreography is entertainment at its best, an incorporation of latin style hip movements and Rockette-esque high kicks.
Combining the show business aspect of Moulin Rouge and Cabaret with the appeal of Chicago, “Burlesque” is a stand out for any musically inclined individual with a liking for dramatic interludes of passionate song and dance.
