A new trend has been named: not Gangnam Style, Planking, or Harlem Shake, but Gallon Smashing. This new trend has been taking over YouTube for the past few weeks and its most popular video currently has over 600,000 views.
Gallon Smashing consists of people in a grocery store with two gallons of fluid running down an aisle and throwing themselves backwards, hurling the gallons in the air. The pranksters try to make it seem like an accident, and pretend to be injured on the floor.
“I thought the video was really funny, but it was kind of a waste [of time],” said freshman Callan Cramer about the video.
Unfortunately, the Gallon Smashing craze sometimes has consequences. The practical joke could backfire in a variety of ways. The jokester could get hurt, get in trouble with the store, or maybe getting caught faking the “fall.” They are certainly putting themselves in jeopardy. “I think it’s hilarious if they can pull it off, but there are many things that could go wrong,” said Cary Lin.
Sophomore Garrett Walsh was thinking of making a gallon smashing video himself but it considering whether it’s worth it with the potential obstacles, “I might make a Gallon Smashing video over the summer, but I don’t want to get in trouble.”
