From November 20th -22nd, the Langley Model United Nations students took a trip to the College of William and Mary, where they not only got a taste of Williamsburg, but also got engaged in a mock UN conference.
At the William and Mary High School Model United Nations Confrence (WMHSMUN), students got a chance to improve their public speaking skills, as they tried to get their opinions across clearly and convince others that the issues at hand were important.
For some students, the trip was their first conference as a participant in Model UN. “It was my first time going on this kind of trip, and they did a really good job of teaching us what to say in committee,” said sophomore Lauren Meeker, a first-year Model UN member.
Those students that have participated in Model UN conferences before were challenged with more advanced committees this time. “I have done other conferences before. But this time, I did a specialized committee with a more intimate setting,” said senior Mai Le. Le has actively participated in Model UN for four years. “In this committee, the debate moved much faster,” she added.
The event proved to be a successful one for Langley and a chance for the club to show off the talent of some of its new members.
Some of the club’s newest members proved to be naturals at Model UN. For example, Alexcia Chambers and Grey Decker won the award of Best Delegate for their work in DISEC during their first conference. Likewise, new members Muskan Mumtaz and Sabrina Khan won the award of Honorable Delegate.
Ultimately, the William and Mary High School Model United Nations conference proved to be an excellent opportunity for club members to bond and learn the fundamentals of Model UN.
