Varsity Field Hockey Preview

The girls’ varsity field hockey team looks to improve on last year’s 11-6 season, which ended in the first round of the 6A North Regional Championship. The team this year is composed of 17 players, eight seniors and nine juniors, seven of which are new to the varsity team. Although having graduated eight players from last year’s team, the team is off to a 7-4 start.

“The team is younger this year, but they play well together,” says Cecily Breiseth, mother of Junior Lucy Breiseth.

Recently, the team competed in the Herndon Invitational Field Hockey Tournament.

“[The tournament was] cool because we got to play other teams from the area that we don’t usually play,” said Junior Hallie Jepsen.

Jepsen is referencing Mountain View High School, Tabb High School, West Potomac High School, and Eastern View High School. Tabb High School, one of the Saxons opponents, are the reigning 4A Virginia State Champions.

This season will be the last for beloved Coach Robb, also a math teacher at Langley, who is expecting a child soon.

After defeating McLean 1-0 for the Rotary Cup earlier in the season, the Saxons have five remaining games in the regular season, three of which are at home. Their next game is tonight at home against Washington-Lee, and the regular season finale is at home against Hayfield on October 13.
