It’s a Vardy Party

How the Leicester City Foxes have risen to first place in the premier league

On December 26 of last year, Leicester City Football Club became the first team in English Premier League history to go from last place in the league to the top of the table in the span of one season. The success of Leicester City has been a key facet to the high level of excitement emanating from this season. Currently, the Leicester City Foxes are in first place by three points with Arsenal and Tottenham following close behind. In a sport dominated by the wealth of the top clubs, the soccer community is amazed about how a team with such little money can perform so well in the world’s most competitive league.

Leading the way for Leicester City have been winger Riyad Mahrez and striker Jamie Vardy. Vardy is leading the league in goals scored with a current tally of 19 goals. Vardy has broken the consecutive goals record, scoring 11 goals in a row. Varsity Soccer captain Taylor Hosley said, “Jamie Vardy has been playing out of his mind recently, he works so hard which makes him so consistent.” Another star of Leicester City is right-midfielder Riyad Mahrez, who is 2nd in the league in assists, and 4th in the league in goals. Mahrez is the top creator for his team who specializes in setting up chances for his teammates. Varsity soccer player Paul Saad has been inspired by the play style of Mahrez, stating, “I try to play like Mahrez during my games, his dribbling and movement is so smooth.” The sensational performances of Mahrez and Vardy have driven the Leicester team forward.

With the incredible 2015-2016 Premier League season, many new fans of the sport have been drawn in. For some Americans, game times of 7:45 in the morning lack appeal. However, people like senior Daniel Salamone have gained interest in the story of Leicester City. “I had never watched soccer before this season, but now I have become a die-hard Foxes fan.” People love underdog stories, and the success of Leicester has grabbed the interest of many new fans. Despite  the great wealth of other clubs, and with low expectations in the preseason, Leicester City have risen to the become the best team in the Premier League.
