The “Ultimate” Sport

Ultimate Frisbee, a new club sport at Langley, has risen this school year and its fans and players are dedicated to making their first season a winning one. With well over 60 sign-ups at club day, the new Frisbee team at Langley, formally known as LHS Discus, has made its mark before their season has even begun. Practice times for LHS Discus are generally on Saturdays, but if changed it is communicated through their Facebook page where students can organize pickup games and talk about ultimate.

Ultimate Frisbee is similar to handball in its rules, but Discus involves a Frisbee and rather than having a goal, you have end zones.  Sam Freund, Vice President of LHS Discus, says of the club’s upcoming activities, “The Frisbee team will have two different sections, one for those who want to compete and one for those who just want to play pick-up games”. Both sections are coed and some tournaments even require a certain number of girls on the team.  Tryouts for the competitive team will be held during the week of October 24-31. McLean, Madison, and Chantilly High Schools will all be competing in a tournament starting November 1st, and Langley will also be competing against DC high schools in a tournament starting October 18th. In Ultimate there are no referees, “It’s an honest game,” states Kevin Pulley, President of LHS Discus. This statement truly captures the ideal that the creators of LHS Discus have in hopes to provide a fun, fair, and fitting team for each player.
