Langley softball started its 2009 season with only four returning members. However, with strong leadership and focused players, the team has maintained a strong record and has hopeful prospects for this season. Fast-forward to 2011, Langley’s varsity softball team is strong and shares “great chemistry,” according to head coach Ms. Jessica Roche, a claim perhaps best represented by the fact that the team only took on two new members this year. Cautiously optimistic that the team will place in the top four of the district, Ms. Roche said, “We’re in good shape this season—we have 11 girls out there that want to play and want to win.” Moving into the season, Langley softball boasts a roster of talented members. Co-captain Mandy Moll was awarded an honorable mention from the all-district team last year. The team’s two freshmen members, Gabby Pijaca and Emily Templin, are also strong additions to the team, according to sophomore and former Langley softball player Skye Toor. As always, the road to the top spot in the district will not be an easy one. The team has only 12 players in a sport that requires nine to field a team. This means that any injuries could have a mentionable effect on the the team’s make up. Toor views this as a “valid point,” saying, “Softball players wear out faster than baseball players due to the strain the heavier ball puts on one’s arm and torque muscles.” Ms. Roche, however, is confident that it will not be a big factor in the team’s play and if injuries are to occur, JV call ups will be the resolution.”We all grew up playing together on the same little league teams, so we’ve pretty much been playing together for our entire lives” said Courtney Conklin, senior captain. This bond will certainly help ensure a season full of success for the competitive Lady Saxons.
