The next time your football, soccer, or basketball coach yells in your face to run 50 wind sprints, they might be helping your GPA. Research shows that forced aerobic exercise can increase brain activity and help you gain brain cells. A recent study completed at the National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan had lab mice either running leisurely on their mice wheels, or being forced to run on mini treadmills. Tests completed afterwards illustrated that the mice who worked out on the treadmills showed more brain activity during these tests. Wheezing, huffing and puffing makes way for “aerobic capacity” which leads to a more active brain than a relaxing just for fun stroll. While a human body does not work the same as a mouse’s and should not be pressed to a point of un-healthiness, pushing yourself can be better for you in the long run, physically and academically. So drop down and give me 20!
