Cheer tryouts used to be a once a year ordeal.
This year cheerleaders who made the team for the fall season were required to try out again in the winter. This split tryout allows a variety of athletes to now participate in cheer.
“We chose to change our tryout schedule from one tryout for the entire season, to two separate tryouts (in fall and winter) so that we could offer the girls the option to do other winter sports,” says Varsity cheer coach Lindsey Upp.
Coach Upp also believes that, “This will be a positive change for the cheerleading program since it will allow girls that maybe couldn’t try out in the fall due to summer vacations or rising freshman that were unaware of August tryouts another opportunity.”
Another advantage of the double tryout is the opportunity for improved athletes to make a higher team. “Having the double tryout gave me the motivation to work even harder through the first half of the season so I could improve and have the hope of making varsity,” said Sophomore Leah Steinke.
Though learning another season’s worth of cheers, chants, and dances may be stressful it ultimately opens the door for everyone to participate in cheer.
