Kolbe McKee - Reporter
Reporter Kolbe McKee talks to Señor Worthington about his life outside of teaching in this exclusive interview.
Kolbe: What sort of productions do you direct/ have directed recently?
Sr. W: “I direct 1-2 shows a year for Pied Piper Theatre (a children’s’ theatre company) in Manassas. I’ve been directing for them since 2003 when I directed Annie. The Spring show I just directed was Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast.” We had four performances at Osbourn Park High School in Manassas. May 6-14 (Saturday evening and Sunday matinee).”
K: Where did your interest in theater come from?
Sr. W: “I directed my first show when I was 17 for a church production. I was addicted to the experience. I studied theatre as an undergraduate at BYU Idaho/BYU Provo but switched to a Spanish Major/History and Theatre minors. When I went to grad school at Kansas, I studied directing, International Theatre with an emphasis on Spanish Language Theatre. Spain and Latin America have some incredible theatre.”
K: What interests is it about the theater that interests you so much?
Sr. W: “I enjoy all the aspects of theatre from set design to rehearsals and blocking, understanding the psychology of the characters, lighting and costume design.”
K: With all of this going on, when did you decide to start teaching?
Sr. W: “I moved to DC in 1999 to work at Arena Stage in Washington, DC. I came back to teaching in 2001, but I ran a theatre in Arlington for 5 years. I decided to close the theatre down in 2006, but I continue to do theatre work wherever I can.”
